Canada GST Credit April 2026: Payment Date, Amount & Eligibility Explained

Canada GST Credit April 2026: Payment Date, Amount & Eligibility Explained

With living costs increasing in 2026, Canadian families will need federal tax credits, like the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit, to relieve some of that stress. The GST credit gives Canadian families tax-free, quarterly payments to help offset the taxes they pay on basic, everyday goods and services. The GST credit is recalibrated in the spring and summer. Understanding the timelines and estimated numbers for the April 2026 payment will help families budget.

The GST Credit Payment Date April 2026

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has set the next GST/HST credit payment for Thursday, April 2, 2026. It will be the final payment for the 2025-2026 benefit year. The benefit is determined by the tax returns for the 2024 year. The payment will be shown, on bank statements, as Canada FPT or GST/HST Credit. If you still get your payments by mail, wait up to 10 business days before reaching out the CRA. This payment is the last one before the federal government’s April 2026 structural changes and increases to the Canada Essential Grocery Benefit.

Who can get this and Where do they live?

If you want to get the payment in April 2026, you must have lived in Canada for taxation purposes for the whole of March and at the beginning of April 2026. Also, you have to be 19 and older. There are some exceptions to this, for example, if the person is a parent, or form a couple with a kid that lives with them, or common law. A lot of people think that to get the payment you have to do a separate application. In fact, you do NOT have to do anything other than file a tax return. No application is necessary, the Canada Revenue Agency considers you to have been eligible for every payment you claimed in your tax return. If you are 19 in the period of January to April 2026, and your tax return for the year 2024 is finalized, payment will be sent to you.

Anticipated Payments for April 2026

Your April installment payment is affected by your marital status, number of dependent children, and adjusted family net income (AFNI). This payment falls within the 2025-2026 payment cycle, and is subject to the indexed rates from last year. A single person would be eligible for a maximum quarterly value of about $133, while a married couple would be eligible for a maximum value of $174, in addition to extra payments for children under 19. It is important to understand that if the CRA calculated your total annual credit to be less than $50 per quarter, they would have made a single lump-sum payment to you in July 2025, thereby not providing you with a separate deposit this April.

Recipient Status Max Annual Amount (2025-26) Approx. Quarterly Payment
Single Individual $533 $133.25
Married/Common-law Couple $698 $174.50
Per Child (Under 19) $184 $46.00
Single Parent (1st Child) $698 $174.50

Future Boosts and the Groceries and Essentials Benefit

As of April 2026, the Canadian government will release the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which will be user tested as a revision of the GST credit. Expected Payment increases of 25% will occur every 3 months for a total of 5 years starting July 2026. Because of the increase of food prices, the government will also be issuing a one-time top-up payment of 50% of the total annual 2025-2026 credit value. Regarding the April 2nd payment, the Government of Canada (GoC) has announced this payment as an early April payment. It also states that a top-up payment will be issued to multiple household accounts by Spring 2026. To track your net payment, the best way to keep track of that is to keep your CRA My Account updated.

Keeping Track of Your Benefits

To keep receiving payments without missing any, you must file taxes every year. If something significant has changed in your life, like getting married, getting divorced, or having a baby, you should tell the CRA as soon as you can because that will affect your “adjusted family net income.” If you think you should have received a payment in mid-April, check if you have money under “Benefits and Credits” in your CRA account. If you have an outdated address or bank account, that’s why you haven’t gotten your money. If you don’t want a money problem, keep yourself updated.
